An observation borehole
is drilled below the saline
interface. The saline water
rises up the borehole until the
hydrostatic pressures counteract
the density differences.
This means that the levels of the
saline interface measured in the
borehole are different from that
in the aquifer.
The height of the saline/ freshwater interface in the borehole also depends on the location of the borehole response zone.
