The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a framework for the protection, improvement and sustainable use of waters: rivers, lakes, coastal waters, estuaries and groundwater across Europe in order to:
- - Prevent deterioration and enhance status of aquatic ecosystems, including groundwater;
- - Promote sustainable water use;
- - Reduce pollution;
- - Contribute to the mitigation of floods and droughts.
Stakeholders need to clearly understand what the WFD is about. WFDVisual helps to simply explain some of the complex processes relevant to groundwater for the WFD.
